Catalog number: R21534
Detect hydrolysis of sodium hippurate by beta-hemolytic streptococci, Gardnerella vaginalis, and Campylobacter jejuni with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ BactiDrop™ Ninhydrin. The hippurate hydrolysis test determines the ability of group B streptococci as well as other bacteria to enzymatically hydrolyze sodium hippurate1-3. Hwang and Ederer employed the Ninhydrin Reagent in a rapid method to detect hippurate hydrolysis by the end product glycine4.

BactiDrop Ninhydrin is used to detect sodium hippurate hydrolysis by beta-hemolytic streptococci, G. vaginalis, and C. jejuni.Hippuric acid is hydrolyzed by the enzyme hippuricase to glycine and benzoic acid. Ninhydrin evokes a five-step reaction to form hydrindantin (a reduced form of ninhydrin), carbon dioxide, and ammonia. A condensation reaction happens with hydrindantin, ammonia and residual ninhydrin to produce a final purple colored complex3.Ready to use: No further preparation is required.Easy to interpret:Positive test - Blue to purple color development within 30 minutes.Negative test - Light grey color development or no color change within 30 minutes.BactiDrop Ninhydrin contains ninhydrin (CAS 485-47-2), acetone (CAS 67-64-1) and butyl alcohol (CAS 71-36-3). The reagent is supplied as 0.75 mL ampules. This reagent has been tested using quality control procedure and found to be acceptable. Not all products are available for sale in all territories.
